America Recycles Day

America Recycles Day takes place annually on November 15th. The day is used as a platform to promote the advantages of active recycling in our communities.

The America Recycles Day Foundation, sponsors events and educational activities nationwide to demonstrate the economic, social, and environmental value of eco-friendly recycling campaigns.

Here are some basic statistics regarding recycling in America:

1. Over 100,000 aluminum cans are recycled every minute in the US.

2. Recycling 20 cans uses the same energy as making 1 can with zero recycled content.

3. Recycled paper requires 40% less energy to produce than paper with zero recycled content.

4. Recycling one ton of steel eliminates the need for 2,500 pounds of iron ore not to mention the fuels required to process it.

5. 60,000,000 water bottles are thrown away in the US every day. That’s 20 billion bottles tossed out each year that could have been recycled.

6. Energy used to recycle paper is close to 70% less than when paper is prepared using virgin wood.

It’s easy to see how recycling benefits the environment. Just consider how much paper, electronics, plastics, metals, and other materials are saved from landfill by being repurposed or recycled into new materials.

Beyond the eco-friendly benefits, there are tremendous cost benefits to recycling too. For example, a single aluminum can made from recycled materials requires one half the cost to manufacture. Additionally, the recycling industry employs over 1 million people.
