Republican Science Committee Taking Heat for Backing Fake News Organization

The Republican controlled Committee on Science, Space, & Technology finds itself under fire from the scientific community following their retweet from the conspiracy theory tabloid, Breitbart News.

The article was titled, “Global Temperatures Plunge. Icy Silence from Climate Alarmists”.

The article that the committee supported was a twisted presentation that credit’s El Niño for the record heat in 2016; but does nothing to address that 16 of the 17 hottest years on record have occurred since 2000.

The tabloid’s piece also neglects to account for global sea temperature increases which have caused the largest coral bleaching event in history just off the Great Barrier Reef. This happened in 2016.

To have a governmental committee perpetuating this brand of fake news is frightening and disturbing on many levels. This would be like establishing foreign policy based on an article published in The Enquirer.

The overt support for climate change denial is an obvious nod to president-elect Trump. Trump has made it clear that climate change denial will be the “Default Position” for his administration while he works to roll the United States Energy Policy back to the 1950s.

The Scientific Community is Responding

Several climate scientists were quick to point out the dangerous position taken by the House Committee.

Michael Mann of Penn State University had the following to say in an interview with The Guardian:

“Three consecutive record-breaking warm years, something we’ve never seen before, and a reminder of the profound and deleterious impact that our profligate burning of fossil fuels is having on the planet. For anyone, least of all the House committee on science, to at this particular moment be promoting fake news aimed at fooling the public into thinking otherwise, can only be interpreted as a deliberate effort to distract and fool the public.”

Breitbart’s Influence on Trump

It’s hard to believe that this article is going to be an exception going forward. Donald Trump is in fact nominating Breitbart former chairman, Stephen Bannon as his chief strategist.
